It's not required to square the hips in runner's stretch - what's important is the hamstring stretch in the front leg. Whatever amount of hip squaring or un-squaring works best is the right one for you!

For my Fish pose, I love this egg-shaped block that I’ve had for many years. I raised my arms for the photo to make it easier to see the block.

Hi Blanca! You're not alone with your discomfort in Dragon. A good alternative is upside-down Dragon or Half Saddle—both stretch the same target area. Regarding your second question, it's not uncommon to have emotional release during hip stretching. While it's not exactly known why, I suspect it's because of how much fascia is there, which is energetically charged tissue.
